Selection
Selection states
There are three main colors when making selections in Qlik Sense. Green, white and gray. The gray does have a light gray and a dark gray state that have a different meaning. In the table below you can see the different states of the color.
Color | State |
Green, with a checkmark as the selection indicator | Selected (included in KPI:s and graphs) |
White | Possible (included in KPI:s and graphs) |
Light gray | Alternative (not included in KPI:s and graphs) |
Dark gray | Excluded (not included in KPI:s and graphs) |
Dark gray, with a checkmark as the selection indicator | Selected excluded (not included in KPI:s and graphs) |
The table shows what the different colors mean when you make selections
The selected state
When you select one or more things in a filter pane and the value turns green it means that it’s in the selected state. The image below illustrates that the year 2022 has been selected. And it’s easy to recognize because of the characteristic green color. When you have selected e.g. 2022 it will automatically filter out a subset of data that is associated with 2022, in this example year month 2022-01 to 2022-06 which will be included in the graphs and KPI:s.
The picture illustrates when 2022 has been selected, easy to see on the green color
The possible state
When a year is selected all values that are associated (possible) to select in other filter panes are white. The picture below illustrates the year 2022 has been selected and in the filter pane for Year-month it's only possible (and still keep the year selection) to select the six months associated with the year 2022. The rest has been grayed out.
The picture illustrates still possible selections in the year/month filter pane
You can refine your selection by making another selection in another filter pane. In the picture below the selection has been made for 2022-03. Now the possible values that are shown are only those values that are associated with both the year 2022 in the first filter pane and 2022-03 in the other filter pane. You can simply add more months to your selection to expand your data.
The picture illustrates selection in two filter panes Year and Year/month
The alternative state
In the “Year” and “Year month” filter pane, the values 2022 and 2022-03 has been selected. All values in the “Year month” and “Year” filter pane have a certain state (color), depending on their relationship to the selected values.Values 2022-01, 2022-02, 2022-04, 2022-05 and 2022-06 in the “Year month” filter pane has a light gray background meaning that it´s in an alternative state and is possible to select, they are associated (but not selected) with the other selected values e.g. 2022. Values 2020 and 2021 in the “Year” filter pane have a darker gray background meaning that It’s no longer associated with the selections, is’t excluded in graphs and KPI:s.
Language selection
When you enter the report service you will have a language set based on your environment. Available languages are English, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian, if another language is used English will be used. It’s not possible to change the language manually in the report.
Select period
One of the first things to do is to select a period of which you want to see your data. In the center report you will start with “Yesterday” as selection, all other reports will not have a default selection.
There are several ways of selecting a period or date. In the calendar you can select a from date and to date. In the “Show period” filter you can select a predefined period like “Yesterday”, “Last 7 days”, “Last month” etc. There is also a filter to select a year and month to be able to select on both years and months.
Change your selection
If you want to change your selection for the given period, you can just click on your selection that is green and it will be deselected, or you can add another selection just by clicking on another value, and then both will be selected. You can also click on the X mark on the filter (selection pane in the top of the picture below) to clear your current selection on that field or press the “clear all selections” button on the top left corner. There are also “step back” and “step forward” buttons to navigate in your selections, go back as or forward (available when you have done some filtering).
Selections in filterpanes
In Qlik Sense there are many ways of filtering your data.
Some filters are available in the top part of the report layout, it is not always the same on all reports.
Example:
All fields are available by clicking the “Selections” button in the upper right corner or in the smart search button in the upper left corner there you can search by typing the value to search for in all fields.
Here you can find all available fields and filter on them.
The picture shows how it looks when you press the selections button there you can find and filter all dimensions.
Selections in visualizations
In Qlik Sense there are many types of visualization. When you analyze your data, you can make different types of selection based on what type of visualization object you are looking at for the moment.

The table shows what type of selection that are possible in different visualizations
Click selection
To make a click selection on an object just single click on e.g bar chart to select the specific value. To deselect the value/datapoint you just click again.
The picture shows how to make a click selection
Draw selection
To use the draw selection, you first click inside the visualization to make it selected and then click on the lasso at the right top corner of the visualization. With the lasso selected you can now draw a line to make your selection for multiple data points. It’s not possible to deselect by drawing with the lasso.
The picture shows how to make a draw selection
Label selection
It's possible to make a selection by clicking on the labels. When dimensions are grouped or stacked the whole group or stack will be selected. If you click again on the label, it will be deselected. In the example below five months are selected (the labels are highlighted to show that they are selected).
The picture shows how to make a label selection
Lasso selection
A lasso selection works the same way as a draw selection. You start by clicking inside the visualization and on the top right corner, you click on the lasso. To select you can draw a circle around the data points you want to capture. The picture shows how to make a lasso selection
Legend selection
When you have a visualization with a legend it’s possible to make your selection by clicking on the legend name. It’s not possible to click on the item representing Others. If you let your visualization be colored by the expression it’s not possible to make a legend selection.
The picture shows how to make a legend selection
Range selection
To make a range selection you just click and drag on the y-axis or x-axis. Sometimes it is not possible to make a range selection on visualizations and one reason for that could be that the visualization is locked to show e.g. last 24 months, so even if you make a range selection on that visualization it will not select.
